Worried by the rising spate of rape and domestic violence against women and children, the Delta State government has taken proactive measures to speedily handle and prosecute offenders as it set up a Special Unit for rape and domestic violence.

The State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Peter Mrakpor who made the disclosure recently during an enlarged meeting with staff of the Ministry, said the move was well articulated in line with the thinking of the state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration.

He condemned all forms of violence against women including rape and gave an assurance that the state was duty bound to protect its citizenry including women and children from the menace.

Mrakpor explained that the creation of the Unit in the Department of Public Prosecution was to serve as a special prosecution line dedicated for rape and domestic violence, adding that the innovation was aimed at fast tracking all rape related cases and ensure that offenders are punished to serve as deterrent to others.

While charging female lawyers and other stakeholders to join government in the campaign, the Justice Commissioner appealed to victims of rape to always report such incidence to the police and come forward to give evidence before the court as prosecution witnesses, saying that their safety and protection during and after trials will be guaranteed.

The Delta Attorney-General while calling on legal officers in the Ministry to leave above board, enjoined them to be guided by the professional code of conduct of the legal profession and that of the Civil Service. He warned against any form of corrupt practices, saying that anyone caught in the web will be arrested, prosecuted and shown the way out of the service.

He told the officers to expect several changes in the operations of the Ministry in line with international best practices in the days ahead as he was irrevocably committed to reorganizing the Ministry for efficiency and better service delivery
