Dr David Nabarro

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has approved the appointment of Dr. David Nabarro of the United Kingdom as Special Adviser on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs).

Ban made this known while briefing UN correspondents  in New York.

The UN Chief said Nabarro would work with Member States and other relevant stakeholders to galvanise action on implementation of the Agenda.

He said the special adviser would also oversee the UN special initiatives on ‘Every Woman Every Child’.

Since September 2014, Nabarro had served as Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Ebola, providing strategic and policy direction for the international response.

According to his biography made available from the UN, from 2005 to 2014 he was Senior Coordinator for Avian and Pandemic Influenza.

From 2011 to 2015 he served as Coordinator of the Movement to Scale Up Nutrition.

Since 2009 he has been the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Food Security and Nutrition, a position he will continue to hold.

Nabarro started his career in the United Kingdom National Health Service.

He has also worked in child health and nutrition programmes in Iraq, South Asia and East Africa, among others.

In September, no fewer than 190 world leaders committed to 17 SDGs to help end extreme poverty, fight inequality, injustice, and fix climate change.
