Popoola: Talents discovered at RCCG sports tourneys will receive NOC’s attention

Secretary General of Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC, Tunde Popoola has assured that budding talents discovered in any sports tournament organised by the Redeemed Christian Church of God , RCCG, will henceforth receive the attention of the NOC.

Popoola, while speaking at the closing ceremony of the maiden Jubilee Life 2016 Redeemers Secondary Schools Games, which was held at the playground of Redeemer’s High School, Redemption Camp, Mowe, Ogun State, Thursday, said the need to give these budding talents government’s attention and national limelight becomes necessary in order to fulfil the spirit and the letters of the Memorandum of Understanding between the NOC and the Directorate of Sports of the RCCG signed last December.

He said he was on ground to monitor the students athletes in action at the just concluded Jubile Life competition, adding that he and Pastor Paul Bankole, Head of the Directorate of Sports in the RCCG have been able to single out some athletes who are good to be recommended to some of the sports federations at the national level for further monitoring.

He said that Jubilee Life 2016 Redeemers Secondary Schools Games being the first tournament organised after signing of the MOU is a good platform to show how best the NOC and RCCG can begin to work together.

The competition, which was sponsored by Jubilee Life Mortgage Bank, featured seven Redeemers Secondary schools in both Lagos and Ogun states in three sports Soccer (boys), Volleyball (girls) and Basketball (boys and girls).

The Volleyball event was won by Covet The Redeemer’s College (CRC), Sagamu, Ogun State after beating Covet The Redeemer’s College (CRC), Idimu, Lagos 2-1 in the final.

The male category of Basketball final was won by Redeemer’s High School, Mowe. They beat Covet The Redeemer’s College (CRC), Sagamu 13-11 points in the final, while the girls’ category was won by Redeemer’s High School, Mowe after defeating CRC Sagamu 12-2 points in the final.

The football final was won by Redeemer’s High School, Mowe. They walloped Redeemer’s College,Ilaro, Ogun State 3-0.

Oluwatobi Adebiyi was adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament and was given a prize award, while all the winners and their runners up in the three events competed for received medals.

Managing Director of Jubilee Life Mortgage Bank, Mr. Remi Olatunbode applauded the spirit of sportsmanship exhibited by the students. He said the success of the maiden edition of the games has given his company the courage to begin to plan for the next edition immediately, as he foresees the tournament going national in 2017 with invitations to schools outside the RCCG.

“This tournament will continue to grow bigger from the next edition as we plan to ensure that sports talent in our children is encouraged and rewarded,” said Olatunbode.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Sports in Ogun State, Mr. Hakeem Adelekan,who was the Guest of Honour at the final ceremony said the government appreciated the impact of the activities of the RCCG in the state, adding that Governor Ibikunle Amosun will always welcome the contribution of the people to the development of the youth in the state.
