Manchester City have delivered at least one farewell trophy to manager, Manuel Pellegrini.

They edged Liverpool to lift the English League Cup, otherwise known as Capital One Cup,  at Wembley today.

The game was 1-1 at full time and it remained so after 30 minutes extra-time.

But in the penalty shootout that followed Liverpool lost three of the shots, while City players were more clinical, with Yaya  Toure slotting  the winning  kick into the corner, unreachable by Liverpool keeper,Simon Mignolet.

The Man City alternative keeper,Wilfredo Caballero was the hero: he stopped three of the shots and denied Jurgen Klopp’s lads an opportunity to win the first trophy for their German boss.

“For me it’s amazing. It was a hard, hard week for me. We have the trophy now – it’s fantastic for the Blue people,” said  Caballero.

The two teams really made the match worthy of a cup final. The first half  ended goalless. But four minutes into the second half, Fernandinho struck for City, putting them ahead.

But in the 83rd minute, Philip Coutinho equalised for Liverpool. There was no other goal, despite the two teams piling pressure, either side, for a winner.

Incidentally, the two goal scorers lost their penalty kicks. Fernandinho, who played first for City, played into the hands of Mignolet, while Emre Can scored for Liverpool. But Caballero stopped the shots by Lucas Leiva, Coutinho and Adam Lallana.
