The Central Bank of Nigeria says a scary explosion at its Calabar office today came from an exploding gas cylinder not a bomb.

Isaac Okoroafor, the Bank’s director of corporate communications said no one died in the explosion that rocked a wing of the office at about 12.30pm today.

Earlier reports had put the death toll at about 10, with many injured.

But in an interview with an online medium, Okoroafor said no death was recorded and that the resultant fire has been put off.

He said the accident happened at the part of the premises under re-construction.

“There is a gas explosion from the construction area of our premises there. There is no fatality yet. A few persons who were injured have been taken to the hospital. The Fire service personnel responded promptly and they have been able to put out the fire,” he said.
