Gov. Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state on Wednesday expressed sadness over the death of nine persons in a motor accident which occurred at the “I35 axis” along Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway on Tuesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accident involved an articulated vehicle conveying stone-chippings and a coaster bus reportedly heading to Ikom, Cross River, from Lagos.

The front tyre of the articulated vehicle reportedly burst, forcing it to ram into the bus and the resultant impact set both vehicles ablaze.

A statement signed by Umahi’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Emma Anya, and made available to NAN in Abakaliki said that the governor described the incident as “saddening’’.

According to the statement, Umahi said that the incident was regrettable as it occurred at the same spot where 10 Labour Party supporters lost their lives in an accident 10 months ago.

“I advise motorists to avoid speeding and check the conditions of their vehicles before plying the highways.

“It is unfortunate that we have allowed avoidable accidents to occur and I enjoin motorists to be patient and cautious while driving,” the governor was quoted as saying.
