A 25-year old man identified as Ajayi Kehinde did the unexpected on Monday evening after he parked his SUV by the Oke Afa canal in Lagos suburb. Then he jumped into the canal to die.
The canal was where over a thousand people died in January 2002 as they tried to escape frightening bomb blasts from the Ikeja Cantonment.
The latest suicide happened at Pako bus stop.
Passersby were helpless to rescue the man.
The police later confirmed the drowning. The man’s body is however yet to recovered.
A witness said the incident happened at 5.30 pm.
The address of the victim has not been identified.Only the ID found in his car gave away his identity.
The police said they would conduct investigation when they get details about him.
The Lagos State police public relation Officer, PPRO, SP Dolapo Badmos confirmed the incident.
She said the police were making every efforts to recover his body and the necessary step would be taken to unmask the circumstance that led to such drastic decision by the victim.
