Protesters in London against Cameron

Thousands of Britons have massed around Downing Street, London  residence of British Prime Minister, David Cameron, demanding he should quit office.

The protesters carried placards, “Cameron Must Go”, ” Get the Tories Out,” “He’s Got to go”. On Twitter, the protest was trending as #resigndavidcameron.  The protesters also demonstrated at the Grand Connaught Rooms, where Cameron and his Tory colleagues were holding a conference.

The demonstration  followed disclosures by Panama Papers that Ian Cameron, the prime minister’s father maintained an off shore company, Blairemore Investments, with which he stashed away assets, to avoid, as critics said, paying taxes in Britain.

David Cameron’s offence is that he did not come clean on the offshore company.

After holding out for several days, Cameron admitted he had owned a stake in the company, which he sold for £30,000 in 2010 shortly before taking power.

The shares were set up offshore to make it easier to invest in dollar denominated shares more easily, he said, saying people had misunderstood and assumed any bank account outside the UK is designed to avoid tax.

On Thursday Mr Cameron told ITV News: ‘I don’t have anything to hide. I’m proud of my dad and what he did and the business he established… I can’t bear to see his name being dragged through the mud.’
