With 96 percent of precincts reporting, the Associated Press reported that the Vermont senator won with 56 percent of the vote. Hillary picked 44 per cent.

Both candidates split the 14 delegates available. Sanders picked 7 delegates, while Hillary also picked 7, extending her delegate lead, to 1287. Sanders has 1068.

Mrs Clinton however has 469 super delegates in her favour to 31 for Sanders.

After the Wyoming caucus vote, there are still 1942 delegates to fight for by  the two candidates before the convention in July.

The primary in New York on 19 April has 247 delegates at stake.

It will be followed by another Super Tuesday on 26 April, where primaries will take place in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Rhode Island and  Connecticut.
