Alex Iwobi: Arsenal legend Nwankwo has been talking to me

Alex Iwobi has revealed Arsenal legend Nwankwo Kanu has been giving him some pep talk during his rapid rise to the first team at the club this season.

The Gunners have seen their title hopes slip away in recent weeks but the 19-year-old has done himself justice with a string of impressive performances.

He has two goals and two assists in nine Premier League games having forced his way into Arsene Wenger’s regular starting line-up in early March.

And the youngster has told how fellow Nigerian and former Arsenal striker Kanu has been offering him guidance along the way.

Speaking to Arsenal Player, Iwobi said: ‘As a kid, especially playing at Arsenal, I did look up to him. He was just a classy player and I have spoken to him a few times as well.’

‘We have had conversations about Nigeria, about myself and what I need to do. [He says] to just be relaxed and he congratulated me and told me I was doing well.

‘To hear that [praise] from such a player like him is crazy and I just have to prove him right. I don’t feel pressure, it is just a privilege to hear that.’

Iwobi played 75 minutes as the north London club were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Crystal Palace at the Emirates on Sunday and will be hoping to continue his run in the team as they host West Brom on Thursday.
