The Kenya baby rescued

Rescue workers pulled out a one and a half -year-old girl from the rubble of a building in Kenya’s capital on Tuesday morning more than 72 hours after it collapsed following heavy rain, the Kenya Red Cross said.

“She was rescued and was severely dehydrated. She is currently receiving medical attention at Kenyatta National Hospital,” Red Cross spokeswoman Arnolda Shiundu said, adding that the girl was rescued at about 4 a.m.

Officials have put the death toll so far at 21. Aid workers had said on Monday that the chances of finding more survivors was unlikely after the building fell down on Friday night.

National Disaster Management Unit Incident Commander Pius Maasai told the Nation of Kenya that the girl appeared to be in a stable condition.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the Kenya Red Cross said the child was found “in a bucket wrapped in a blanket”.

“She appeared dehydrated with no sign of physical injuries,” the Red Cross said.

Nairobi County Police Commander Japheth Koome said the child’s rescue has given rescuers hope of finding more survivors.

This brings the number of people rescued from the collapsed building to 136. The death toll stands at 23.

Mr Maasai said the search and rescue operation was still under way.

“We appeal to anyone who has a missing relative to be patient since the exercise is delicate due to balancing both safety of rescuers and victims,” he said.
