Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue has ordered the management of Benue State University to stop the implementation of the new conditional charges introduced for students of the university.

Ortom made the information known in Makurdi on Tuesday in an interview with newsmen.

He said the decision to order the stoppage of the conditional charges had become imperative following complaints by students and parents.

The new administration in the school under the leadership of Prof. Msugh Kembe, had introduced different charges across faculties, ranging from 45,000 to N55,000 per student.

The conditional charges included development levy, accreditation, utility, practical, consumables and certificate.

The new conditional charges raised the fees for medical social sciences and law from N66,000 to N121,000, while others increased from N60,000 to N105,000.

The administration of the university said the charges were meant to improve the revenue profile of the institution.

Ortom said he had to cancel the charges because they were an additional strain on students and parents.

Already the state legislature has intervened in the matter by summoning the Vice-Chancellor for explanations.
