The Minister of Youths and Sports, Mr Solomon Dalung, on Saturday evening led more than 20 Christian clerics to break the Ramadan fast with their Muslim brothers in Kaduna.

Dalung said the aim was to foster religious tolerance and better understanding among Muslims and Christians in Nigeria

The minister said it was also part of effort of strengthening inter-religious harmony and promoting peaceful co-existence among different faith based organisations in the country.

Dalung disclosed that this was the fourth year that he has led Christian clerics, including Rev. Fathers, Pastors, Evangelists and other top Christian leaders, from northern Nigeria to Kaduna to break the Ramadan fast with Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi at his Kaduna residence.

The occasion had also provided an opportunity for the two revered groups to mix and interact with each other with a view to fostering peaceful coexistence and promoting religious tolerance among their respective followers.

“We want to show Nigerians that we are all created by one God (Allah) and we all came from Adam and Eve as our original parents,” Dalung said.

He urged Muslim scholars to continue praying for ever lasting peace in the country and also for rapid socio-political and economic transformation of the nation.

Pastor Yohanna Buru, who is the General Overseer of the Christ Evangelical Intercessory Fellowship, Sabon Tasha, Kaduna, who spoke at the occasion, said that they were out to use Ramadan period to strengthen the relationship between Muslims and Christians.

“That is why every year we join Muslims round the world by visiting them at their homes for Iftar and attending their Tafsir at their places of worship,” he said.

Buru explained that as Christians, the Bible taught them to love their neighbours as themselves, adding that that is reason why “we usually donate food stuff to Muslim widows, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and the less privileged in the society”.

Responding on behalf of the Muslim scholars, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, a renowned Islamic leader in Nigeria, said that Christians were good friends with Muslims.

Sheikh Bauchi called on both Christian and Muslim leaders to intensify prayers for President Muhammadu Buhari and for the unity of the country.

He urged Nigerians to be patient with the new policies of the administration as they were meant to strengthen the economy and improve the welfare of the people. (NAN)
