A U.S. sailor was handed two and a half years in prison on Friday for raping a woman on the Southern Japanese Island of Okinawa, the report said.

The report stated that the Naha District Court sentenced the 24-year-old at the U.S. Marines’ Camp Schwab.

According to the ruling, the man took the Japanese woman visiting Okinawa to his room at a hotel in Naha in the early hours of March 13.

Thereafter, finding her asleep in the hallway and reportedly drunk, and raped her, Kyodo News agency also reported.

The reports said that the man pleaded guilty and offered an apology at the court for his actions.

Okinawa houses 74 per cent of the U.S. military installations in Japan.

Residents have long been critical of the military presence on the island amid incidents of violent crime committed by U.S. troops.

In late April, a 20-year-old Okinawa woman was allegedly raped and killed by a former U.S. marine.

The incident prompted many locals to demand the U.S. Marine Corps withdraw its forces from the Island. (dpa/NAN)
