Court slams N600,000 bail each on 2 scavengers for alleged theft

Nigeria-police-logo A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja has granted bail to Sefiullah Ibrahim and Abdulkareem Yahaya in the sum of N600,000 each for alleged theft of tricycle membership identity card.

The presiding officer, Mr Abubakar Sadiq, who granted the bail on Thursday after they were arraigned, ordered them to produce a surety each in like sum.

Abubakar said that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, and adjourned the matter till Sept. 8.

Ibrahim,19, and Yahaya,19, all of on fixed address, were granted bail on a two-count charge of theft and mischief.

The prosecuting counsel, Mr Dalhatu Zannah, had informed the court that on Aug. 3, Nura Aliyu of Kado village, Abuja, reported the matter to Life Camp Police Station.

Zannah told the court that Aliyu came to the station with the aid of Police Surveillance Team attached to Life Camp Police Station.

He said the Aliyu parked his tricycle at Life Camp junction at about 9.30 p.m. and was calling for passengers when the defendants and one Ali with unknown surname now at larger attacked him.

The prosecutor said they forcefully destroyed his tricycle savings box and jointly stole his tricycle membership identity card, unknown amount of money, and two sim cards.

He said that the defendants were arrested while trying to escape by the police surveillance team.

During police investigations, N1, 460 and the tricycle membership identity card were recovered from the defendants.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 288, 327 and of the Penal Code.

The defendants denied the allegations.
