The Nigerian Prisons Service has explained the reasons for commotion in Kuje Prisons which resulted in the hearing of gunshots by neighbours living in the vicinity of the facility early Monday morning.

While explaining reasons for the commotion, the Controller  of Prisons FCT Command, Daniel Odharo, said in a statement that the commotion resulted from some inmates resisting a routine cell search at the Medium Security Prison.

Chukwuedo Humphery, the Public Relations Officer of FCT Command of NPS who announced this in a statement said, “At about 1000hrs on Monday 29th August, 2016, staff of Kuje Prison carried out a routine cell-search which is a part of the Prisons operational guidelines to prevent breach of security within and around the prisons.

“Some inmates tried to resist the exercise which led to an altercation between the search party and the inmates.

“This was quickly put under effective control. No prisoner was injured, no property damaged and the yard is calm and peaceful.

“The Controller of Prisons FCT Command, Odharo Daniel has assured that the security and wellbeing of prisoners in the Federal Capital Territory will continue to be held as a priority task and will never be compromised.

However, it was gathered that the inmates were resisting the routine cell search which was introduced by the new director of the facility because the management seized the telephones and money found of some prisoners when the first routine search was conducted.

It was also gathered that the inmates were angry because power supply has been cut off from the prison for about four days now.
