The Chinese Government says measures are being taken to ensure that the goods exported from China to Africa are of good quality.

Prof. Ren Xiaoping,. at the China Foreign Affairs University, said this while delivering a lecture entitled; “The Development of China-Africa Relations’’.

She spoke at the ongoing 2016 Seminar Course for Information Officers and Journalists from English-Speaking African Countries in Beijing, organised by the Chinese Government.

Xiaoping, also a former Ambassador to Namibia, said that the production of substandard and fake goods was a challenge to the Chinese Government,

She said the efforts being made by the government would sustain and foster the trust in China-Africa relations.

“It is not that the products are fake; there are good products which come at a higher price and there are cheaper products which may not last so long.

“They find that kind of market for these consumption levels.

“We do not want Africa to think we only dump fake products in their markets; this is not the essence of the relationship.

“The Chinese Government is trying to raise the standard of goods but it takes time and these products are regulated by the market.”

“We in China have the same experiences you have; it is a headache for the Chinese Government and people, because such goods harm the reputation of Chinese products,’’ she said.

Xianoping, however, said that measures on ground were being strengthened to clamp down on manufacturers of such goods.

The former ambassador said that in the past when the market was strictly under the control of the government, there was nothing like substandard goods.

She added that before the government opened up the markets to allow Chinese businessmen to do business in Africa, there was nothing like substandard or fake goods.

“In the past, everything was under the government control, there was no such thing, but now the market is free and flowing, we open the windows, fresh air comes in and flies come in too.

“The government hates it, it is not what it wants, if we use fake products manufactured by our people, it is understandable, but when you take them to Africa, it is not good.’’ (NAN)
