Iran confirmed on Sunday that it has executed one of her famous nuclear scientists, Shahram Amiri on espionage charges.

“This person had access to the classified information of the establishment and had availed them to the enemy,” Iran’s Judiciary spokesman Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejei told reporters working for state owned IRIB TV, referring to the U.S

“He was tried in the competent courts and was sentenced to death,” Mohseni Ejei was quoted as saying.

“He neither repented nor compensated and he was trying to leak some information from inside prison, too,” Ejehi added.

The scientist who played a key role in the development of Iran’s nuclear programme, according to AP had disappeared while on pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia in 2009.

He was later seen in some online video filmed in the United States about a year later.

The scientist claimed he was kidnapped and held against his will by Saudi and American spies.

Amiri was seen in the same videos he appeared in walking into the Iranian interests section at the Pakistani Embassy in Washington, demanding to be sent home.

Reports indicated that the scientist has been held in detention since he returned to Iran.

AP reported U.S. officials as confirming in 2010 that Amiri was paid $5 million to offer the CIA information about Iran’s nuclear program.

But the scientist was unable to take the money back to Iran where he ran a radiation detection program.

US officials also said the scientist travelled to the U.S. and stayed there for months under his own free will.

Amiri, who was born in 1977, was forced to return to Iran due to threats on his family by the authorities of the countries.
