Police arrest suspected kidnappers of lawmaker

The police said on Thursday that it has arrested three members of notorious gang of kidnappers allegedly  responsible for abduction of a member of House of Representatives in his farm along Kaduna -Abuja road on 2 August, 2016.

 

Don Awunah, spokesperson for the Police said in a statement that the suspects who were also responsible for other violent crimes along  Kaduna-Abuja and its environs were arrested after coordinated and painstaking investigation by the Intelligence Response Team(IRT) of the IGP’s monitoring unit.

 

According to the Force  Public Relations officer, suspects, led by one 25 years old Haruna Adamu kidnapped Hon. Sani Bello, a current member the House of Representatives, on 2nd August 2016 in his farm along Kaduna –Abuja road.

 

He listed other members of the gang now in police custody as 18 years old Shaibu Adamu and 30 years old Abubakar Saidu.

 

He added that other kidnappings were also traced to the suspects.

 

0n how the suspects were arrested, Awunah, a deputy commissioner of Police explained that they were trailed and rounded up at Ungwan Kawu village in Dan Dumi L.G.A in Katsina State.

 

He added that during interrogation, the suspects voluntarily confessed to the commission of the offence   and also admitted to the various roles individually and collectively played in their criminal enterprise.

 

According to him, one of the suspects, Shaibu Adamu led operatives to a location in the nearby village (Kawu village) where the sum of N250, 000.00 in a polythene bag , part of ransom collected by the gang was recovered and marked as exhibit.

 

Also, a Gione phone used by the suspects for negotiation of ransom with families of their victims was  also recovered by the Police

 

He added that suspects are assisting the Police to apprehend other fleeing members of the gang.

The suspects will soon be arraigned in court for justice to take its course.

 

Awunah also said the acting Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris reassured Nigerians that the Police will not relent its commitment and determination to ensure that criminals and their collaborators have their day in court to face the wrath of the law.

 

But he urged the public must see law enforcement as a collective responsibility of all sundry and avail the Police credible information and assistance.
