The Nigerian Army said suspected militants led by one Benjamin Simplee (AKA G1), a wanted criminal kingpin and  leader of the Bakassi Strike Force, in several speed boats attacked troops deployed at Efut Esighi waterfront in Bakassi LGA of Cross River State early Saturday morning.

Colonel Sani Usman, Acting Director, Army Public Relations who issued the statement said during the attack, a soldier was killed in action, while 2 soldiers were missing in action.

He added that the militant also burnt a buffalo pickup vehicle.

The Army spokesperson said the troops also killed 2 of the attackers while the rest escaped with gunshot wounds.

Colonel Usman said the reinforcement sent has found the missing soldiers, but he did not say whether they are alive or dead.

The Army Public Relations chief said the troops’ location has been reinforced with more gunboats and air component while the clearance and pursuit operation is ongoing.

He added that the attack would not deter the military from the discharge of its duties, adding that the  perpetrators of the dastardly act would be found and brought to justice.

“The Nigerian Army wish to send an unequivocal warning to all the criminal elements in the society that intent to attack any of its locations to have a rethink,” Colonel Usman warned.
