There was mild drama at an Egor Magistrate Court, in Benin on Thursday, when a 30-year-old man, Dickson Uwadinusu, who was ordered to be remanded in prison custody, said he was happy going to prison.

Uwadinusu who was ordered to be remanded by the Magistrate of the Court, Mrs. E. E. Edokpayi, for allegedly threatening to kill his parents, suddenly said to his girlfriend who was also present in Court, “I am happy going to the prison and will come back for you on the adjourned date.”

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Inspector (WP) Violent Soyemi, had told the Court that the offence was committed on November 4, at Agbanbe street, Evbotubo Quarters, Benin City.

Soyemi said on the date, the accused locked his father, Goddy Uwadinusu and his mother Mrs. Elizabeth Uwadinusu, out of their matrimonial home and threatened to stab them with knife and bottle.

She added that the accused assaulted his father by pointing a knife and bottle and threated to stab him with them.

The Prosecutor told the Court that the offence is punishable under sections 86(1) and 351 of the Criminal Code.

The accused pleaded not guilty and his Counsel urged the Court to grant him bail in liberal terms.

The Prosecutor however objected to his bail, saying that if granted bail, the accused will still go back and constitute danger to his parents, adding that the DPO wanted to settle the matter amicably but the accused refused.

The presiding Magistrate remanded the accused in prison, pending the determination of his bail and adjourned the case to November 29, for hearing.
