AAU students beg for reduction in tuition fees

Students of Edo State-owned Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, have apologized to the State Government and the general public over their recent protest that led to the closure of the institution, describing it as unfortunate.

The students, in a press statement issued and signed by the acting President of the Students Union Government/Caretaker Committee on Sundry Issues, Mr. Arhewhoh Paschal Ikhide and made available to journalists in Benin City on Wednesday, said the otherwise peaceful protest embarked on by the students, especially 200 level students over hike in tuition fees turned sour due to some unforeseen circumstances and that it was no way designed to undermine the administration of the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ignatus Onimawo.

While reiterating that the students were poised to defend their rights, Ikhide however said the students of the institution are intelligent and rational and would not allow themselves to be used to undermine the successful administration of the institution but will rather work with the management and other organs to ensure the growth and sustainability of the school.

While expressing satisfaction with former Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s achievements in the school, he said there was urgent need for the present administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki to increase the monthly subvention to the school, stressing that it will help keep the institution afloat.

He said there was also the need for the state government to reduce the tuition fees payable by the students as parents were now finding it difficult to cope with it.

“We cannot but bring to the attention of government the school fees regime which is biting hard on the pockets and funding of university education, the realities of the recent economic down turn experienced by Nigerians should be put into consideration,” he said.
