Bassa-Komo, a riverine community in Bassa Local Government Area of Kogi State has been deserted by both indigenes and residents. This follows a break down of law and order resulting in a communal clash between the Ebira and native Bassa people in which several lives are feared to have been lost on both sides.

As at the time of going to the press, the actual casualty figure is yet to be ascertained. A source claimed many houses were burnt and that not less than ten people have been killed on both sides. The rough terrain of the area made access difficult for security operatives.

TheNews learnt that the situation is further complicated as a team of security operatives being drafted to the community was involved in a fatal accident at Odenyi. Sadly, two policemen were feared killed in the accident, while the injured were said to have been taken to the General Hospital in Dekina for medical attention.

“Dangerous weapons like guns, daggers, knife and clubs were freely used in the clash that lasted for many hours. Many houses were set ablaze during the attack that lasted for several hours, leading to pandemonium among the native community with residents scampering for safety,” the source said.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), William Anya, confirmed the incident and the attendant arson. He also confirmed the desolation of the community after the clash. He however declined to confirm the casualty figure as he said the Police was yet to have full information.
