Edo govt to check incessant doctors’ strike with pay as you work

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has given indication that the incessant strikes embarked upon by medical doctors will henceforth be checked with the pay as you work policy.

The Governor gave the indication in Benin, during the commissioning of a 5-star hospital, performed by President Muhammadu Buhari. He said that doctors employed to work at the hospital would be paid based on their productivity.

Oshiomhole who said when doctors are paid based on their productivity, they will either choose either to spend all their time on strike or attending to patients in the hospital ward.

He said: “My position is that this hospital will not be run in the way that the public service is run‎. Doctors will not be paid on the basis of prescribed salary that does not discriminate between doctors who work and doctors who do not work.

“From what we see elsewhere, you are paid according to your productivity. We need to create a new remuneration system that seeks to reconcile effort with reward.

“That way, people can choose whether to spend all their time on strike or to spend their time at attending to patients. The choice will be theirs ‎and they will be rewarded exactly according to their input.

“We will make that efforts to work are rewarded and not for those that want to embark on strike.”‎
