The National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has licenced the University of Benin (UNIBEN), to generate and operate a 7.5 megawatt Independent Power Plant (IPP), within the its campus

The Vice Chancellor of UNIBEN, Professor Faraday Friday Orumwense, announced this on Monday In Benin while briefing journalists on activities lined up for the 42nd Convocation/Founder’s Day of the University.

He explained that the University has also been given licence for independent electricity distribution network (IEDN) within its premises.

‎The Vice Chancellor further disclosed that Methylated spirit and Hydrogen Peroxide production unit of the University is “presently awaiting final approval to commence production, having successfully undergone a mandatory pre-assessment by the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Coontrol.”

A total of 12,808 graduands are to be awarded various diplomas and degrees at this year’s Convocation ceremony‎ which will commence on Wednesday, November 23.

A breakdown of the figure shows that 154 persons will be awarded Doctorate Degree‎ (Ph.D), 2,531 for Masters Degree, 233 Post Graduate Diploma, 9,281 Undergraduate Degree, 95 Undergraduate Diploma and 514 Unclassified.

“It is gratifying to report that a total of 61 graduands are going to be awarded first class honours degree,” Orumwense announced.

Activities lined up for the ceremony ‎include Founder’s Day Lecture to be delivered by a former Minister of State for Works, Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi, Convocation Lecture, to be delivered by the Honourable Minister for Works, Power and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola and the commissioning of 15 newly completed projects.
