Peace Corps members on parade

Mr Bala Joshua, the Commandant, Nigerian Peace Corps (NPC), Nasarawa State Command, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the Peace Corps Bill into law.

Joshua made the appeal while addressing newsmen on Thursday in Lafia.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Bill passed by the Senate on Nov. 24, gives approval for the establishment of the Nigerian Peace Corps as an agency under the Ministry of Interior.

The Senate Committee on Interior presented its report on the floor of the floor upper chamber.

Its Chairman, Sen. Bayero Nafada, while presenting the report, urged the Senate to support the passage of the Bill, saying “the organisation will be of great benefit to the Nigerian youths’’.

Joshua said that the bill, if finally assented to by President Buhari, would fight the high rate of unemployment, and help the corps to synergise with other security agencies in the area of conflicts resolution.

“My appreciation goes to the Senate and House of Representatives for passing the bill to establish Nigerian Peace Corps and give it a legal backing.

“It will go a long way in enhancing peaceful co-existence, help in augmenting the efforts of security agencies, fighting high rate of unemployment, crimes and other security challenges,’’ he said.

Joshua said that the state command had planned to deploy its men and officers to different locations, worship centres and other centres to ensure hitch-free yuletide.

According to him, we are collaborating with other security agencies to sensitise the people on the need to behave well, shun crimes and other negative tendencies in order to have hitch-free yuletide.

He urged men of the command to maintain standard and adhere strictly to the professional ethics in the interest of peace and national development.

Joshua also called on Nigerians to be law abiding, respect the constituted authorities and live in peace, irrespective of their political and religion affiliation.

He said that no meaningful development could be achieved without peace. (NAN)
