The Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, UI, Professor Abel Idowu Olayika has decried the harsh realities of the economic recession confronting the premier university, stressing that its implications on the university community is unimaginable.

Olayinka disclosed this in a mail he wrote to the staff of the institution and uploaded on Facebook.

According to him, “The Management of the University of Ibadan once again restates its understanding of the harsh realities of the economic recession and its implications on members of the university community. There is hope that the 2017 budget will take care of all the short falls in revenue leading to under-payment of salaries and allowances in 2016 all of which were dutifully reported every month to the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation and the National Universities Commission in Abuja. Our hope is that our institution will be able to get what is due to it in the coming year while we continue to shore up Internally Generated Revenue”.

The magazine learnt that the shortfall in the salaries of the staff is amount to about four mouths salary which the staff are yet to collect.

The magazine further learnt that the staff had a low key Christmas and New Year celebration due to unavailability of funds as a male staff disclosed under anonymity, “Could you believe that what we used to get in December was not given to us. No rice, no vegetable oil and other things that our family would have benefitted from”.

Another staff, from the none academic staff also lent his voice when he said, “Things are hard. If it continues this way, by the time the system will collapse, I don’t know what will happen”.
