Rev. Dr. Samson Ayokunle, CAN President

The youth wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Sunday urged the Federal Government to reactivate the Nigeria Inter- Religion Council (NIREC) as a step towards solving religious crisis in the country.

Evangelist Musa Misal, the Chairman of the 19 northern states Executive Council Forum of the youth wing of the association, made the call while briefing journalists at the end of the forum’s meeting in Gusau.

He said that the became necessary in view of the spate of killings being perpetrated on innocent Nigerians in the name of religion.

He noted that NIREC, which is jointly chaired by the Sultan of Sokoto and CAN National President with membership from the two major religions –Islam and Christianity — was highly respected by Nigerians.

“This respect can be explored by giving powers to the council to advice, control or sanction preachers when and where necessary, especially when some religious leaders preach hatred against other faiths.”

The Christian youth also urged governments at all levels to improve on security for the protection of people’s lives and property.

He further called for the reconstruction of churches destroyed in the North-East by Boko Haram insurgents.
