Eight persons were on Tuesday arraigned before an Awka Magistrate, Mr Godwin Ibemesi, over possession of revenue documents belonging to the Anambra Government.

The alleged illegal revenue agents, who included a female, were charged with using the false documents to impersonate state revenue officials.

Those arraigned were Afamefuna Okeke, Eugene Chukwumaeze, Sunday Ofoke, Chukwujekwu Ifema, Chukwuemeka Okafor, Ugochukwu Onwukwelu, Izunna Okeke and Chinenye Amasiama.

According to the prosecution, they were arrested at the Igbariam Junction in Oyi Local Government Area of the state on Jan. 25.

They were arraigned over the production and use of some false document known as sanitation/community/capitation rate tickets to impersonate local government revenue officials and falsely collected revenue from commercial motorcycle operators and other category of road users.

The four-count charge preferred against them by the prosecution accused them of printing the “All Commercial Motorcycle 2017 emblem and the Heavy Duty and Haulage Transport Association’’ emblems of Anambra State and other inscriptions with the intent of passing them to commercial vehicle operators in the state as genuine documents for  illegal revenue collection.

However the prosecutor, Mr Innocent Obi, at the arraignment, said that only five of the eight suspects were in court and sought for an adjournment to produce the rest.

The court adjourned the case to Feb. 8 and issued a bench warrant for the remaining suspects to appear in court.(NAN)
