The Mobile Electricity Service by MTN was launched on Monday 20 February 2017 at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja. Present at the occasion were: Minister of Power, Works & Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola; Minister of Communications, Mr Adebayo Shittu; Chairman, Senate Committee on Power, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe; Chairman, MTN Nigeria, Dr Paschal Dozie; United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington and others.

It is an initiative by MTN Nigeria, in concert with Lumos, a solar firm known worldwide. Purpose of the new device is to provide mobile solar electricity systems for the benefit of families and businesses in the country.

The launch in Abuja means the device is to be sold throughout Nigeria. The advantages, according to a report, are that users can enjoy “accessible, noise and fume-free electricity for daily use and pay with airtime from an MTN mobile phone.” It is capable of lighting up bulbs and power fans, televisions, cellphones and computers.
