Following the expiration of the tenure of Professor (Mrs) Gbemisola Oke as the Deputy Vice Chancellor, DVC, (Academic), in the University of Ibadan, UI, the authority of the Institution has declared the position vacant.

Therefore, in accordance with the provisions of section 4(2) and (3) of Decree No. 11 of 1993, (now Act 11 of 1993), the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka has forwarded the names of the Dean, Post Graduate School, Professor A. A. Aderinto of the Department of Sociology, Faculty of the Social Sciences and Professor O. Fagbola of the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry to the Senate to contest for the enviable position.

The Act states, “Where a vacancy occurs in the post of Deputy Vice Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor shall forward to the senate a list of two candidates for each post of Deputy Vice Chancellor that is vacant. The Senate shall select for each vacant post one candidate from each list forward to it under sub-section (2) of this section and forward his name to council for confirmation”.

Also, Olayinka forwarded the names of Professor (Mrs) Olanike Kudirat Adeyemo of the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Professor Miracle O. Oyewola of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Technology to contest for the newly created office of DVC, Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, RISP.

A statement signed by the school registrar, Olujimi Olukoya, disclosed that the election for the two offices would be held during the next regular meeting of the Senate on Wednesday, March 8 March 2017.

However, all the contesters have commenced rigorous campaign in the institution. The campaign takes the format of sending text and email messages to their colleagues in the Senate, going round the departments to solicit for votes, sudden change of attitude by greeting everyone they meet to demonstrate their nicest posture, and other ways of wooing the members of senate who will determine the persons to be elected.

Investigations revealed to the magazine that Aderinto and Adeyemo have better chance of clinching the exalted position.

Professor Oke was elected into the Office of the DVC (Academic) in 2015 and was the second female to ocuppy the position.
