The Centre for Educational Empowerment and Orientation (CEEO) has trained 135 school managers on core teaching skills, responsive class management and self evaluation to improve the education sector.

The Programmes Director, CEEO, Mr DavidCrown Oyebisi, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Wednesday.

Oyebisi said the school managers, drawn from both public and private schools in Nasarawa, Benue and Plateau were trained to ensure they performed their supervisory roles effectively.

He said that the organisation embarked on the training because education was the indicator of positive change in any society.

He said the managers would task the teachers to discharge their duties effectively thus improved performance at examinations.

The director said that teachers at the basic, secondary and tertiary institutions deserved motivation to become productive as they play major roles in determining the quality of education.

“When teachers are ill-motivated, it results in low self esteem, poor service delivery, mass failure in core subjects and high rate of examination malpractice.

“We have conducted more than 135 training since our inception about a decade ago, 80 school managers from Lafia North Development Education Authority were trained on teachers mentoring in 2013 and 65 school managers from Benue were also trained,“ he said.

He said CEEO organised training in Nasarawa State titled: “The New Teacher Nigeria Project“, to share motivational and inspirational experiences to help teachers appreciate the teaching profession, overcome comparison syndrome and improve on the sector.

NAN reports that the organisation honored 25 outstanding teachers earlier in the year with the Grand Teachers’ Merit Awards, Teachers’ Mentor Merit Award, Great Teacher Merit Awards and the Nigerian Educators Financier Merit Awards.
