A 44-year-old commercial driver, Alamu Olusegun, who allegedly assaulted one Kareem Suni, by beating him up, was on Tuesday arraigned in a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Olusegun, whose address was not given, is facing a charge of assault.

The prosecutor, Insp. Akpan Ikem, had told the court that the accused committed the offence at AP Bus Stop, Ibiye, Badagry.

He said the accused gave the complainant several fist-blows that caused him severe injuries, after a disagreement they had over money.

“There was an argument between the complainant and the accused, and the defendant started beating him mercilessly. It was onlookers that rescued the complainant, “ he said.
The prosecutor said that the accused was arrested by a policeman on duty at the bus stop where the incident occurred.

Ikem said the offence contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 171 provides for a three-year jail term for offenders.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Jimoh Adefioye, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.

The case was adjourned until June 6 for mention.
