The collapsed building

Two people were feared dead while 14 others were rescued by emergency respondents on Monday as another building collapsed in Lagos.

While confirming the incident, the General Manager LASEMA Mr Adesina Tiamiyu said the prompt response by emergency agencies led to the rescue of 14 victims from the collapsed building which, according to him, was at No 9 Daddy Alaja Street, Oke Arin, Idumota, Lagos Island.

He revealed that LASEMA received a distress call at about 7:00am concerning the collapsed 3 storey building and immediately mobilised all these stakeholders to the scene and successfully rescued 14 victims with various degrees of injuries. The rescued victims were immediately moved by the LASAMBUS and LRU Ambulance to Mainland Hospital for further treatment.

The rescued victims, he said, were immediately moved to Mainland Hospital for treatment.

He added two other bodies recovered from the debris were handed over to the family members for burial.

It was gathered that as at 1.30p.m., all the rescue operations had been concluded. Some of those rescued alive were treated at the scene.

Mr. Tiamiyu noted that preliminary investigation at the scene of the incident revealed that illegal activities of repairs was on going as  sands and concrete blocks were seen on upper deck of the building together with scaffolding around it, despite the fact that the building was inhabited by people.

He however said that proper investigation would be carried out by the relevant government agencies to ascertain the actual circumstances leading to the collapse of the building.

He therefore advised owners and developers of buildings in the State to strictly adhere to the building codes and physical planning laws of the State so as to avert unnecessary loss of lives.
