A commercial bus driver whose name was given as Anthony Akhimien, (popularly known as DPO), has been arrested by the police in Benin, Edo State, over the death of his girl friend.
The deceased, suspected to be in her 30s, was said to have passed the night (Wednesday to Thursday) in the suspect’s house at 17B, Akugbe Road, close to Uwa Market, located off TV Road, in Benin.
Residents of house number 7, Obomwan Street, off 2nd West Circular Road, were however shocked when they woke up Thursday morning to find the corpse of the deceased inside thier bathroom.
The residents raised the alarm when they discovered the corpse and thereafter alerted the police at Textile Mill Road Division.
Some of the residents who did not want to be named, said they heard the victim and her lover, quarrelling and fighting at about 4 am on Friday.
They alleged that following the death of the victim, her lover carried her lifeless body through the fence and deposited it inside the bathroom of a compound behind his house.
As at press time, men of the Textile Mill Road police division have evacuated the corpse while occupants of 17b Akugbe Road where the alleged murder occurred have deserted the house for fear of indiscriminate arrest by the police.
It was however gathered that the suspect was apprehended by some soldiers who broke the door of the suspect’s room open at about 3 pm and found him inside the room and handed him over to the police at Textile Mill Road Division.
The State Police Command Spokesman, Moses Nkombe, who confirmed the incident, said investigation is ongoing.
