The National Emergency Relief Agency (NEMA) has assured victims of the recent attacks on the Mambilla Plateau of Taraba of Federal Government’s intervention to ameliorate their plight.

Air Commodore Sunny Ohemu, the Director, Search and Rescue, NEMA, gave the assurance on Friday during an assessment visit to some IDPs camps in Gembu and Nguroje in Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba.

Ohemu told the IDPs that the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, was deeply worried about the attacks.

The NEMA official said the present administration would not condone any further destruction of lives and property of innocent citizens.

He explained that the Acting President sent the team to carry out on the spot assessment of the situation with a view to supplying some relief materials to meet the needs of the IDPs.

The director, who had earlier paid a courtesy visit to the Paramount Ruler of the Mambilla Plateau, Dr Shehu Baju, appealed for calm.

He urged the paramount ruler to impress it on district and village heads to ensure that peace was maintained in their respective domains.

Responding, Baju thanked the Acting President for responding promptly to the attacks by deploying security agencies to arrest the situation, as well dispatching NEMA to assess its impact.

The paramount ruler said that the victims, some of who were scattered and living at the mercy of good Samaritans, needed to be brought together in IDPs camps for proper assessment by NEMA and other donor agencies.

Ardo Zubairu Gaji, leader of the displaced persons taking refuge at the Goverment Day Secondary, Gembu, had earlier told the NEMA director that the victims were seriously in need of relief materials and medical supplies.

He said the coming of NEMA would be a serious relief to the victims because they remained without basic supplies since the attack on them.

Scores of people were killed and their properties worth millions of naira destroyed by suspected Mambilla militia between June 16 and June 24.
