Ambode: Lagos State Governor.

A non-governmental organisation, Poverty Aid Uplifting Lives (PAUL), says it will train 50 single parents annually in the various vocations as part of efforts to empower them to become self-reliant.

Mr Paul Nesbitt, a citizen of the Carribean Island and President of the organisation, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)
in Lagos on Saturday that both men and women would benefit from the skills acquisition.

PAUL, a Nigeria-based outfit with its headquarters in Ogudu, Ojota, focuses mainly on empowering single parents including
men and women.

Nesbitt said the mission of the organisation was to alleviate poverty among single parents following the current economic
realities in the country.

“I have travelled to several African countries, especially Nigeria and I noticed mass poverty and pains on peoples’ faces,
particularly single parents.

“Most governments in other countries provide for and support single parents, especially women and teenagers.

“In Nigeria, most single parents struggle to survive with their children because of the stigma and rejection by their families.

“Our mission is also to introduce programmes that will impact positively on the lives of single parents and also step up
advocacy for their assistance,” he said.

Nesbitt said that the organisation would also provide some financial support for the beneficiaries.

He recalled that a similar programme had been organised for secondary school students to refocus them on their education, development and empowerment.

He called on government at all levels and well-meaning individuals to support initiatives aimed at reducing poverty, especially
among women and other vulnerable groups in the society.

The National Coordinator PAUL, Miss Unoma Ebun, noted that some single parents, especially women were victims of domestic violence and rejection by their husbands’ families.

“We are empowering them to make them self-reliant and responsible as most single mothers experience domestic violence and rejection in the society.

“We discovered that most organisations focus on women and children issues as well as sexual abuses, but after fighting for
their rights, they still need a support system,” she also told NAN.

“We make them financially independent by training them in the various vocations of their choices in their environment for convenience and also provide foodstuffs and allowances for their upkeep until they can pay their bills.”
