Alhaji Kabiru Rurum: under probe

The Kano State House of Assembly on Monday set up a five-man committee to investigate the corruption allegations leveled against its immediate past Speaker, Alhaji Kabiru Rurum.

The decision of the assembly to investigate the allegations, which was proposed to the house by the new Speaker, Alhaji Abdullahi Atta, at the plenary, was unanimously accepted by the house.

Atta, who, was elected and sworn in on Monday shortly after Rurum’s resignation, set-up the committee to investigate the matter and submit its report within three months.

However, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Assembly, Alhaji Muhammad Butu-Butu, a member representing Rimin Gado/Tofa Constituency, was appointed as chairman of the committee.

Similarly, at the plenary, the Assembly also elected Alhaji Abdulaziz Gafasa, member representing Ajingi Local Government, as its new majority leader.

Ajingi’s election was sequel to the election of the former majority leader (Atta), who is now the new Speaker.

Again at the session, the Assembly had impeached the Deputy Majority leader, Alhaji Maifada Bello, member representing Kibiya local government constituency.

The deputy majority leader was accused of siding with the former speaker, who is currently being investigated.

Bella’s impeachment followed a motion moved by a member representing Nasarawa local government, Alhaji Ibrahim Gama, with an impeachment letter signed by 31 out of the 40 members.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the former speaker had in his resignation letter said he resigned in order to protect his image and that of his constituency over the corruption allegations.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after the plenary session, Rurum urged his colleagues to be fair and just while conducting their investigation.
