Gov. Ibrahim Dankwabo of Gombe State

Alhaji Muhammad Damji, the Executive Chairman of Gombe State Board of Internal Revenue (BIR), says the board is targeting N1 billion revenue monthly through Voluntary Asset and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS).

Damji said this in Gombe on Thursday after a rally to launch the scheme in the state.

He said that the board realised N150 to N200 million monthly, but was now expecting N1 billion monthly following the launch of VAIDS.

Damji said the scheme was formally launched by the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on June 29 where he declared every Thursday from July 1 to March 30, 2018 as VAIDS days.

He said the campaign was aimed at increasing awareness among the public as well as sensitise tax payers and the entire public on tax as a civic responsibility.

According to him, the advantage of the scheme is that taxpayers can regularise their tax status by paying outstanding taxes due to government within a flexible time frame.

”Also, taxpayers will enjoy a benefit of forgiveness of overdue interest and penalties which means that they will not face any criminal prosecution for tax offences or be subject of investigation.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that BIR in collaboration with the Federal Inland Revenue Service went round markets and motor parks in the state to educate the public on the scheme.

He appealed to residents in Gombe to cooperate in order to avoid the wrath of the law after the expiration of the scheme.
