Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) top scorer, Stephen Odey’s goal in the 40th minute was enough to earn Lagos-based MFM FC a deserved victory over Wikki Tourists of Bauchi on Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that prolific striker, Odey, struck in the 40th minute after a deft pass from Chukuma Onuwa in an obviously nervy match.

The teenage striker’s goal on the Match Day 29 has now confirmed him as the highest goal scorer in the NPFL, with 17 goals. Odey had now scored MFM FC’s  first goal in 17 games,  outright record for club and player, according to NPFL Statistics.

Odey, however, was quick to dedicate the goal to the Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministry founder and proprietor of the Club, Dr D.K Olukoya and wife who celebrated their birthday on Saturday.

Olukoya and his Wife Shade marked their birthday on July 15.  Olukoya clocked 59 and  his wife 49.

In the match MFM FC reportedly played in his honour, the team expressed their determination to log a win to celebrate  their founder.

Odey said he was happy to have scored the only goal to honour the Olukoyas.

“I am happy for this goal.It does not matter to me whether it’s a lone goal; what we need is the victory and thank God,  we are able to win the match.

“We are looking forward to more victories which we want to use to have a shot at the NPFL trophy or represent Nigeria at the continental level, he said.

Media Officer of the team, Olawale Quadri said that the victory was for the sports loving proprietor of the club, Olukoya who gave his all to the sustenance of the club.

“The victory is well deserved. But it is a victory to the founder and proprietor of the club, Dr Olukoya who has laboured for the sustenance of the club.

“Our proprietor has always been our number one supporter and we appreciate his efforts over the club. He is sports loving and always encourages the youths.

“We will also try our best to win the league in his honour as our spiritual father and also our indefatigable  proprietor,” he said.

NAN reports that MFM still occupy the second spot on the NPFL log with 49 points from 29 matches, with 15 wins, four draws and 10 losses.

The team are two points adrift the league leaders, Plateau United,  who are on 51 points from 29 matches with 15 wins, six draws and eight losses.

Akwa United, with a game in hand, are third with 46 points. They could go second if they win their next match.
