Church Governance

There is now another addition to the bibliography of Christian teachings in Nigeria. It is a book, entitled, Church Governance: The Sacred Facts Of Ministry And Leadership.

Written by Olufemi Mosaku-Johnson, the lead Minister, Jesus Way Outreach Mission in Ogba, Lagos, as well as an author, conference speaker, missionary and superintendent of Inland Christian Command Inc., the book gives insight into how a church or religious organisation can be effectively organised to achieve the divine commission of winnig souls for God and desimating the kingdom of darkness.

The author explains: In Genesis, when God “had to create man, He could no longer do it alone anymore. He had to call the remaining Godhead Jesus and Holy Spirit. This is the beginning of GOVERNANCE.” He added that throughout the New Testament, “we find Jesus providing GOVERNANCE to His servants to follow the type of government that He had inspired over the previous 1,500 years. Jesus Himself set the example. ‘Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles” (Luke 6:12–13).’

Here, as Mosaku-Johnson explains, Jesus gives us a powerful example. “A true servant of God must pray fervently and seek God’s will— not his own! And yet, in the end, such a leader should make the decisions involved in governing the affairs of God’s Church. This you can call Apostolic “board” and at times when there is a crucial issue, a committee would be set up comprises of , Peter, James and John, coming up with what to do. After much thought, and then fervent prayer to the Father throughout the night, Jesus then chose the twelve apostles…”

Moreover, under the leadership of the Jesus Christ, the author says Paul had authority to direct the activities of Titus an evangelist (as contained in the epistle of same name), and also to give him instructions on how to carry out his responsibilities. “Titus, responsible to Christ overall and to Paul especially in administrative matters, had authority to ‘appoint elders’ within the guidelines set by Paul…”

Mosaku-Johnson is a graduate of the Polytechnic, Ibadan.
