Martin Luther King Jr’s nephew, Isaac Newton-Farris Jnr, has urged Nigerians to give President Muhammadu Buhari all the support he needs to complete the good work he is doing in Nigeria.

Farris Jr gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday after a luncheon in honour of the King Jr’s family in Nigeria.

The luncheon was organised by Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, to mark the first Black History Month in Nigeria.

“I know that a lot of Nigerians feel a little displeasure with President Buhari with the way he is moving too slowly with some of his reforms

“But I will counsel Nigerians: give this man the time that he needs to do the job that he is doing.

“He is one of the most legitimate leaders the continent has produced.

“If you all would just stick with him, I assure you he is going to make Nigeria a better place.”

He urged Nigerians to support President Buhari to complete his work as they stood to benefit in the end if they did.

“Fortunately he is an honest man, but if he was just deciding in his mind what is corrupt and what is not corrupt and just taking action himself without a process, what would happen with the next guy that comes along, who might not be as honest as he is.

“So you need a process. So it is not about the person or personality it is about the fact.

“So I will just counsel Nigerians: I know I am a visitor; it is really not my business, but be careful before you vote this man out of office.”

The eldest person in Luther’s family, Dr Naomi Barbara King, had earlier called on Nigerians to rise up to their responsibility and vote for the candidate of their choice

“I want you to take the responsibility and vote when the time comes for the candidate of your choice because you have a voice and your vote is your voice.

“Remember that if you love God, you love your neighbour and have in mind what the almighty God has done, He will give you the desire of your heart,” she said.

In her remark, Dabiri-Erewa said that Martin Luther King Jr’s family was in Nigeria to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the death of their father.

“As they celebrate the 50th anniversary in Nigeria, which is the first of its kind, they said that the Africans in the diaspora and Africa must work together for the development of the continent.

“So it is a major step forward; it is our desire to work with our sisters and brothers of African descent to move the continent forward,” she said

She said that the family’s coming to celebrate the anniversary in Nigeria was a testimony to their belief in the country and the leadership quality in Nigeria.

According to her, the visitors acknowledge what President Buhari is doing especially in tackling the issue of corruption in the country.
