UI admits 5000 postgraduate applicants for 2017/18

The Dean of Postgraduate School, University of Ibadan, UI, Professor Jonathan Babalola has announced that the institution has offered admission to about 5,000 out of 15,000 candidates that applied for admission into various postgraduate degree programmes for the 2017/18 academic session.

Speaking today at the 73^rd Interdisciplinary Research Discourse of the institution titled “Synthetic Biology: From Biology to Engineering”, delivered by Professor James Sturgis of the Aix-Marseille University, France, Babalola said that the university has continued to ensure quality control of its applicants by setting aptitude test (Use of English) which majority of the applicants failed.

The Dean assured that the institution would continue to maintain standards and quality to ensure that the best of applicants gain admission to the university.

Speaking earlier, the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Idowu Olayinka noted that the university would ensure partnership with the Aix-Marseille University to develop fully the area of synthetic biology.

In his lecture, Sturgis called on the Nigerian universities and government at all levels to invest in Synthetic biology to develop solutions to improve crops, livestock and health of its citizenry.

While describing it as a low investment with huge returns, Sturgis maintained that synthetic biology investment would ensure the independence of Nigeria from being at the mercy of foreign interests and multinationals companies.

He however called for appropriate establishment of legal and regulatory framework to ensure bio-safety, bio-security and ethics.
