Just in: Car of missing Nigerian Army General found in a pond

A joint task force constituted by Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Tukur Buratai made up of officers and soldiers from 3 Division Quick Response Team, Operation Safe Haven, the Police, Federal Fire Service officers as well as docal divers have found the vehicle belonging to missing retired General, Maj. Gen Idris Alkali at a pond in Lafendeg Du,  Plateau State.

The retired Army General was riding alone in the car when he got missing around Jos on his was to Bauchi State some weeks ago.

The Nigerian Army authorities have launched a search for him and had embarked on the draining of the pond over suspicion that the retired officer was killed and his vehicle pushed into the pond by members of local militia in the area.

Brigadier-General Umar Mohammed, who led the search had earlier said troops were deployed to Dura Du which is in Jos South local government area of Plateau State as preliminary investigation indicated that the vehicle of the missing officer was seen close to a pond in the area.

According to him, the military had received information that some vehicles had been pushed into the said pond.

 

He had vowed that the Army will do everthing possibe find the missing officer even if it meant draining the pond which used to be a mining site and is very deep.

The Army had earlier deployed a crane to scan the water for the vehicle, but later resorted to evacuation of the water from the pond.

It was not clear if the remains of the General was found in the vehicle brought out from the pond.
