IT experts want all tiers of government to digitalise operations

The Managing Director, Savvy Cove Nig. Ltd, Mr Chuck Igbah on Monday urged the government at all levels to digitalise their ministries operations to make them efficient.
Igbah gave this advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
He said that all levels of government needed to upgrade their operations with Information Technology (IT) tools to enable them catch up with the rest of the world with digitalised economy.
“In this digital economy, Nigeria cannot afford to be left behind, especially since the ministries are core government backbone.
“In a digitalised economy, data is very critical and it is one of the factors that drive innovations and development as well as help in better planning.
“Digitisation and Information Technology is a must.
“It must be used to enhance the way things are done in the ministries as well as enhance the productivity of staff.
“All tiers of government need to start taking their human productivity very seriously and create the enabling environment for them to shine.
“It will help to make the office tidy, unlike most offices that have files flying everywhere and packed up in a corner,’’ he said.
Igbah said that efficient and functioning ministries do not just happen, it must be planned for.
Mr Chuck Nwokocha, the Executive Vice President of Savvy Core Nig. Ltd., also stressed the need for governments to provide IT infrastructure such as computers and train staff on how to operate them.
“There is also need for various government officials to get out of their conventional state of mind and start doing things differently.
“There must be the desire and the willingness to transform the system.
Nwokocha said that with proper digitisation of ministries such as ministry of works at federal, states and local government levels, road network in the country would easily be identified.
He said digitisation would also help the workers locate roads that need urgent maintenance.
He said that this would help the ministry to plan adequately for new road construction and rehabilitation.
Nwokocha said that digitisation could also drive every area of the ministries operations from town planning, housing, road construction, environment to agriculture, among others.
