Firm tasks government on cyber security

Mr Bello Adedayo, the President of branch of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) on Saturday tasked Federal Government to establish cyber security firm that would check cyber crime and data theft in the country.

He told newsmen on the sidelines of ICANN conference in Abuja.

ICANN is a nonprofit organisation that coordinates the maintenance and procedures of databases related to names and numerical spaces of the Internet, ensuring the network’s stable and secure operation.

Adebayo said “government should increase the weight of punishment attached to cyber crimes to at least make the criminals reduce their fraudulent activities.

“Government should also establish cyber security firms that would be on constant lookout for fraudulent and illegal acts carried out online to control such activities.”

The branch president said that the general masses also have an important role to play in eliminating cyber crime and development of the internet world, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.

He explained that the internet was one of the best things that happened to the world of technology but it also had it flaws and loopholes that were undergoing correctional process to make it smooth and safe for various activities.

He, therefore, stressed the need for government to step up enlightenment programme against cyber crime and the role individuals could play in keeping the web secure.

He said that the ICANN conference was to discuss current issues faced in the open world of technology and the challenges faced by the corporation to maintain the existence of the internet.

According to him, it covers various solutions on internet fraud, illegal domains and hacking of users data with new technology and development goals for the organisation.

Adedayo advised internet users to participate in protecting their Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, as it was way of accessing private users’ details or information.

IPs are connectivity guidelines and regulations that govern computer networks.
