Fake female Army officer docked for assaulting security guard

A self acclaimed female Army officer, Mary-Jane Uwachua, 30, who allegedly assaulted two bank security guards, was on Thursday, brought before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The defendant, whose address was not provided, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and attempted willful damage.

Uwachua, however pleaded innocence of the offences.

The prosecutor, Insp. Ben Ekundayo told the court that the accused committed the offences on Feb. 10, about 11:25 p.m. at Ikota, Lekki Lagos.

He said the defendant and her accomplice  who also claimed to be an Army officer, now at  large, assaulted two bank security guards when the man’s ATM card got stuck in the ATM machine.

He added that the duo beat up Mr Godspower Aromeh and Joshua Iliya, security guards attached to the bank, while discharging their lawful duties.

Ekundayo said that the defendant and her accomplice also attempted to break the ATM machine at the bank premises.

“Uwachua’s boy friend ran away and left her to face the music alone. Both had earlier claimed to be Army officers.

“When the man , her accomplice got to the ATM machine and his card got stucked, he started beating up the security guards on duty.

“The two guards reported to their Chief Security Officer (CSO) who came with reinforcement but the man had fled and the defendant was arrested,’’ he said.

The offences contravene Sections 174, 406 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Section 174 carries three years imprisonment, while Section 411 prescribes two years imprisonment for offenders.

The Magistrate, Mrs A. M. Olumide-Fusika granted the defendant bail of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

She said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and one must be relative of the defendant while the other must be a civil servant.

Further hearing on the case has been fixed for Feb. 18.
