Bundesliga Season Ends as Obasi's Schalke Reach Champions League

The Bundesliga season came to an end with Schalke 04 claiming the last automatic UEFA Champions League spot ahead of Bayer Leverkusen that finished fourth and picked a place in the Champions League final qualifying round.

Schalke defeated FC Nürnberg 4-1 with Nigerian midfielder Chinedu Obasi scoring the fourth goal for Schalke in stoppage time, days after missing out on Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi’s provisional World Cup squad.

The win put Schalke on 64 points, three points ahead of Leverkusen that came from a goal down to claim a 2-1 win at home to mid-table Werder Bremen.

Champions Bayern Munich edged VfB Stuttgart by a lone goal to finish with 90 points, 19 points clear of second placed Borussia Dortmund that thrashed Hertha Berlin 4-0 at the Olympia Stadion, with Bayern bound striker Robert Lewandowski scoring two goals for Dortmund to finish as the Bundesliga’s top scorer.

In other results, Wolfsburg won 3-1 at home to Borussia Monchengladbach to finish the season in fifth place with 60 points, a point behind Leverkusen and five points ahead of Monchngladbach that finished in sixth.

Mainz ended in seventh place with 53 points after a 3-2 win over Hamburg that must win a relegation playoff to maintain a record as the only club never relegated from the Bundesliga.

The German football season closes next weekend with the DFB Pokal final between defending champions Bayern and Dortmund.
