Mr Kris Atsaka, Chairman, Benue chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, says that the state government’s approval of “accountability press briefings” would reduce rumour mongering in the system.

The approval makes it mandatory for every ministry, department and agency to give accounts of its activities, especially projects undertaken, and challenges being faced.

Atsaka told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Makurdi on Tuesday that endorsing the briefing signified government’s transparency and commitment to good governance.

“The briefings will clear grounds on stories heard from rumours and grapevines; it will also let the public into government’s revenue, expenditure and focus,” he said.

He urged journalists to take advantage of the initiative to raise concerns and make inputs that would improve the quality of governance.
