The 2003 Durex Global Sex Survey has revealed that the French are the people who have sex the most in a year.
Also, the “French people are the second laggest consumers of alcohol per capital in the Western world, after Luxembourg.
A University Don, Prof. Victor Aire of the University of Jos, made this disclosure on Monday in Benin, while delivering the keynotes address of 3rd Biennial International Conference of the Department of Foreign Languages, Faculty of Arts, University of Benin (UNIBEN), with the theme:
“French Studies and National Development.”
“French was the first modern country to legalize same-sex activity, in 1791. In contrast, gay was only legalized nationwide in USA in 2003.”
“Until 1964, French women were not allowed to open a bank account or get a passport without their husbands’ permission,” he said.
According to the Professor, all high schools in France have condom vending machines and adulterous wives had to chase chickens round the towns naked, as punnishment.
He said further: “From 1798 to 2012, it was illegal for women in Paris to wear trousers. The law remained unenforced for a long time though.
“One punishment for an adulterous wife in medieval France was to make her chase a chicken through town naked.”
Prof. Victor Aire however disclosed that more people speak French language in Africa than in France.
Speaking earlier, the convener of the event, Prof. Raymond Elaho said the Biennial Conference which started modestly in 2013, has grown in leaps and bounds, attracting scholars of French from far and near.
Elaho added that for this year’s conference, not less than 75 abstracts have been received from delegates from within and outside Nigeria, who are participating in the conference.
On his part, Prof. Austin Moye, the Head of Foreign Languages Department, UNIBEN, described language as an asset, adding that the participants should embrace the opportunity of the conference for their benefit.
According to him, “Every language is an asset, including the immediate community language. It is a key to the culture of the people.
“If you understand and are fluent in a particular language, you have the opportunity to exploit it,” he noted.Durex
